Oral hygiene day Celebrations, 2022

Oral hygiene day was celebrated on 1st August 2022 by the Department of Periodontology, Index Institute of Dental Sciences, a Constituent unit of Malwanchal University Indore.

Oral Hygiene Day is celebrated with fervour across India by Dental Colleges and Associations of various specialties. Events are conducted to create an awareness among general public about the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and different ways and measures to prevent various dental and systemic diseases. Every year 1st August is observed as Oral Hygiene Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. G.B.Shankwalkar. Dr. G.B.Shankwalkar is considered as doyen of Indian Periodontics and also the Founder of Indian Society of Periodontology.

Dr. G.B.Shankwalkar was the first post-graduate teacher in India to start MDS course in Periodontics at the University of Bombay.

World Health Organization conducted a Global Burden of disease study in 2017 which concluded that 3.5 billion people across the globe suffer from oral diseases. Most of the oral diseases like tooth decay, gum diseases are preventable diseases by following simple oral hygiene measures.

There are several measures that can be followed regularly to ensure that oral hygiene is maintained and it includes Regular oral hygiene practice like Brushing, Flossing, Tongue Cleaning, use of mouth wash. It is also mandatory for regular dental check-ups at least once in 6 months. Apart from this consuming healthy and nutritious diet, refraining from smoking and alcohol is also recommended.

The Indian Society of Periodontology issues Standard Operating Protocols to be followed for celebration of Oral Hygiene Day every year. Every Dental College across India and various Specialty Associations conduct various programmes to mark this day.

The Department of Department of Periodontology, Index Institute of Dental Sciences conceived a list of programmes to mark this memorable day. The Organizing Team Included Dr. Magesh Kumar, Dr. Pallavi Singh, Dr. Rinku Jagnade, Dr. Abhishek Sinha, Dr. Ranjitha. A week long programmes were planned that included Oral Hygiene Awareness Camps, Poster and Video making Competitions and Street Play.

On 1st August 2022Street play was conducted at Government Primary School, Kajipalasia Village, Indore District. The Street play was performed by the House Surgeons depicting various Myths surrounding dental problems and treatment. Through this street play every student was educated about the common dental problems and recommended dental treatment. The students were also taught about proper brushing methods and oral hygiene instructions. Oral Hygiene Kits were distributed to all the students as well as to kids nearby the school. Poster and Video making competitions were also conducted. The themes for the poster competition were “Oral Health is Overall Health”, “Mouth is the gateway to body” and “Be Proud of your Mouth”. The Themes for the Video Competition included Tooth brushing techniques, Oral Hygiene Instructions, myths surrounding periodontal treatment, Do’s and Don’ts for Oral Hygiene.

The students of 3rd, 4th BDS students and Interns overwhelmingly participated in the competitions. Oral Hygiene Awareness camps were conducted and patients underwent scaling procedure and received oral hygiene instructions. The patients also were briefed about the impact of poor oral hygiene on systemic diseases like Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Pregnancy and Arthritis.

Dr. Navneet Agarwal, Professor and Head, Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry and Dr. Suparna Ganguly, Professor and Head, Dept. of Conservative Dentistry were the Judges for the poster competition. Dr. Himanshu Kanungo Professor and Head, Dept. of Orthodontics and Dr. Rajeev Shrivastava Professor and Head, Dept. of Prosthodontics were the Judges for Video Competition.

The programme concluded with felicitation ceremony wherein prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of the poster and video competition as well to all those who participated in street play, poster and video competition. In his concluding speech Dean Dr. Satish Karandikar reiterated the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene to prevent development of oral and systemic diseases and also the responsibility of every dental student and dental professional in taking this message to each and every citizen to make India free of oral diseases. In his vote of thanks Dr. Magesh Kumar Professor and Head, dept. of Periodontology thanked all the participants of the Street Play, Poster, Video competitions, Oral Hygiene Awareness Camps. He also mentioned about the help of Staff of Government Primary School, Kajipalasia village for their support rendered for the street play and specially thanked them.
