National Anti-Ragging Week: Promoting a Safe and Respectful Campus

Index Institute of Agricultural Sciences organised a National Anti-Ragging Week to create awareness among students about the harmful effects of ragging and the importance of maintaining a safe, respectful and inclusive academic environment. The programme focused on sensitising students about how ragging can adversely affect an individual’s mental well-being, confidence, academic performance and overall educational journey. Students were encouraged to understand that ragging is not a harmless form of fun or interaction, but a serious issue that can have lasting consequences for both the victim and the person involved. The initiative aimed to strengthen a culture of mutual respect, dignity, cooperation and responsible behaviour among students across all years of study.

During the programme, Senior Advocate Dr. S. K. Nirala, the keynote speaker, addressed students on the legal aspects and consequences associated with ragging. He explained that the country has strict provisions against ragging and that students involved in such incidents may face disciplinary action, suspension from the institution and other legal proceedings, depending on the nature and severity of the case. He also highlighted that a ragging-related complaint or serious incident can affect a student’s academic record and future career prospects. Students were advised to stay away from any form of physical, verbal or mental harassment and to immediately report any such incident to the concerned institutional authorities. The session helped students understand their responsibilities and the importance of speaking up against ragging.

Director Dr. Rajendra Singh emphasised the need to build healthy relationships between junior and senior students based on respect, guidance and cooperation. He stated that the institution is committed to creating an environment where every student can pursue education without fear and confidently work towards their career goals. Dr. Shivam Verma, HOD; Dr. Ajay Gaur, In-charge; Dr. Rohit Kumar, Assistant Professor; members of the Anti-Ragging Committee and faculty members were present during the programme. The event concluded with students taking a pledge to oppose ragging and contribute towards a positive, safe and supportive campus environment. The initiative reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to student welfare, discipline and a zero-tolerance approach towards ragging.
