Awareness Week on Parthenium Held at Index Institute of Agricultural Sciences

16th to 22nd August, 2024

The Index Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Malwanchal University, Indore, recently observed Parthenium Awareness Week. The week-long event focused on educating attendees about various aspects of Parthenium, commonly known as carrot grass or white top (scientific name: Parthenium hysterophorus).

Dr. Shivam Verma, Head of the Department, highlighted that the weed is referred to as 'carrot grass' due to its resemblance to carrots. Originating from Mexico, Parthenium has spread to the Americas, Trinidad, and Argentina. It was first recorded in Pune, Maharashtra, in 1956 and has since proliferated across India, initially affecting barren and fallow lands but now becoming a significant problem in crop fields as well. The recent rise in Parthenium infestation in agricultural areas is a growing concern.

Ajay Kumar Goud emphasized that Parthenium is an aggressive weed posing significant threats to agriculture and human health. It can cause allergic reactions, leading to skin irritation and respiratory issues. To combat this invasive species, integrated weed management practices were suggested, including awareness campaigns, lectures, and various regional activities throughout the week to engage the community and promote a healthier and safer environment.

The event was attended by various faculty members, students, and Director Dr. Rajendra Singh, who supported the initiatives and discussions during the awareness week.
